A New Free Driver for OMRON Sysmac PLC

AdAstra Research Group (Moscow, Russia) has released a new version of the free TRACE MODE SCADA/HMI driver for the OMRON programmable logical controller. The new driver is built in the TRACE MODE SCADA/HMI 6.09 release and above.

TRACE MODE SCADA/HMI logoAlthough the TRACE MODE SCADA/HMI software had drivers that enable data exchange with OMRON PLCs over network as well as via serial interface, the new driver operates over UDP and it is much faster, easier and more functional than the previous ones.

So, for example, the new TRACE MODE OMRON PLC driver has the following important features:

  • the new driver is multithreaded. It is possible to allocate up to three additional priority threads;
  • it offers quering the control group using CALL.ChGrReq channel;
  • in case of communication failure with the PLC, the new OMRON driver automatically switches to a special low-priority thread and also switches it back automatically as soon as the communication is restored;
  • no configuration file has to be manually created in order to configure an OMRON PLC from the TRACE MODE IDE 6.09;
  • the new driver allows setting timeouts for each device.

The new OMRON driver can be tested in real time in the TRACE MODE free development system. The free TRACE MODE 6.09 development system is available for the free download.

The wide library of free controller drivers , IO'sc and meters, covering more than 2586 devices distinguishes TRACE MODE 6 from other SCADA/HMI softwares.

Pakistan Students Study Industrial Automation Technologies with SCADA TRACE MODE

TRACE MODE SCADA/HMI logoA new laboratory practice on Supervisory control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Human Machine Interface (HMI) system development is launched for undergraduate students of Electrical Engineering at University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila (Punjab, Pakistan). University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila commonly referred to as UET Taxila is among the best engineering universities in Pakistan. The new practice is based on the TRACE MODE SCADA/HMI software.

The laboratory work was developed by  Director Technical, Creative Electronics & Automation in his MSc Research work under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ahmad Choudhry using the Omron's latest CJ1 Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), the Device-Net field bus and the latest version of TRACE MODE 6 SCADA/HMI software. The whole model is made in a very easy manner so that student can understand it with limited prerequisites.

As Electrical Engineering students are more acquainted to the Parameters used in Power industry, so the experiments are developed using these familiar parameters. However, it is not limited to this approach. Another concern of the author was to use all the 10 PLC workstations and provide idea of the field-bus systems in which Device-Net usage is explained. Most of the institutions have limited licensed versions of the software. The author has used Basic Version of Trace Mode-6 Free integrated SCADA/HMI-SOFTLOGIC-MES-EAM-HRM development environment for 64000 I/O points (available free for downloads). It includes full set of editors and a profiler Runtime (for 1 hour of continuous operation in real time), history logger and alarm server, Auto building, Built-in drivers and ODBC/OPC/DDE support. For each experiment, Flow chart, Ladder code and Ladder description is provided in detail which have made students very convenient to fully understand the project and can make change in the Power Factor Improvement system UET Taxila University Pakistanladder code to modify the experiments.

The laboratory experiments proved to be great success in developing understanding of SCADA for undergraduate students. All the steps for setting up the hardware, software installation and PLC programming are explained in detail. The research includes development of complete step-by-step guide to implement SCADA. The students can very easily follow the guidelines and can perform the experiments and moreover can produce their own experiments within no time using the same or different approach.

The new laboratory practice is not limited to experiments for Power industry; students can develop SCADA for process controls, batch processes, robotics, mechatronics etc. The free TRACE MODE SCADA development software and limited runtime version can be distributed among the students, who can learn and develop Human Machine interfaces and logics as well as perform limited 1 hour simulation by using Virtual simulators which will make system run like as it is connected to the real time hardware to test their results on any PC.  This can act as the standard tool for learning SCADA as well as PLC programming as per IEC 1131-3 standards.

HART Driver for Micro TRACE MODE 6 to Connect HART Devices and WinCon 8000

AdAstrA Research Group, Ltd made available an external driver for Micro TRACE MODE 6 industrial controller programming system. This driver is designed to connect WinCon 8000 controller to sensors and flowmeters using a popular HART protocol.

HART Master driver connects WinCon 8000 controller running Micro TRACE MODE 6 to the HART-modems and MUX.

The HART communication driver is designed as a t11 driver. Each controller's COM port accommodates one HART-modem or one HART-MUX. The number Driver HART for Micro TRACE MODE and WinCon 8000of the connected sensors varies depending on the modem type.

The driver enables the operations below:

  • communicate with up to 16 HART-devices at 1 COM port at up to 1200 baud rate;
  • read currently measured values using the requested units;
  • read existing current values in mA;
  • read range percent;
  • receive HART-sensors data, such as serial number, sensor unit code, measurement range and minimum sensor interval;
  • read blocks of dynamic variables.

The driver can be setup in an easy and intuitive TRACE MODE integrated development environment.

The new driver is available in the electronic form only, however it includes a Quick Start Guide and a HART driver setup sample for the WinCon 8000 controller.

Kristall factory in Moscow was one of the first facilities to deploy the HART driver for WinCon 8000. Previously, Micro TRACE MODE 6 for WinCon 8000 was shipped only with the integrated drivers for Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, DCS, etc.

New free of charge drivers for TOSHIBA TOSVERT series frequency converters are added to the TRACE MODE SCADA/HMI software and published at the AdAstra Web site for download:
  • TOSVERT.VF-nC1

via RS485/RS232C interfaces.

A frequency converter (inverter) is an integral part of the frequency regulated electric driver and is used for electric motor control. Modern frequency converters allow to implement complicated control algorithms, perform motor protection, adjust the efficiency, optimize operating conditions depending upon load and perform other functions. Now these capabilities become accessible for TRACE MODE SCADA users.

TRACE MODE SCADA/HMI (unlike other HMI softwares) features a huge library of free controller drivers covering about 2586 devices . The use of commercial drivers or OPC-servers normally makes a SCADA project more expensive by $300-800 whereas the TRACE MODE SCADA/HMI drivers are provided to the user free of charge.

New Release of TRACE MODE 5.15 Will Be Issued in May

New 15th release of the integrated SCADA- and SOFTLOGIC-system TRACE MODE 5  will be issued by AdAstrA on 20th May 2004.

In the release, a GSM-Activator has been updated and the following elements have been added:

- DSR signal control disabling (to operate with non-standard COM-ports).

- support of modems operating under the GSM phase 2+ specifications (GSM-modems of the latest generation).

TRACE MODE 5.15 will contain new free drivers. The drivers are available free in the section PLC Support list!

In addition, some bugs have been corrected. 

TRACE MODE users can prder a CD-ROM with TRACE MODE 5.15 in the offices of AdAstrA and its partners beginning from 20th May, or download the programs in the Web-site section of TRACE MODE Technical Support  beginning from 30th April.

TRACE MODE In Control of The Waste Water Treatment Plant In Malaysia

Antcorp System Sdn Bhd, (Penang, Malaysia)  has completed development of the waste water treatment system at the Sewerage Plant (Malaysia). This plant is the biggest in the north area of the country.

The project is based on the integrated  SCADA/HMI and Softlogic system TRACE MODE, on the Advantech operator stations and on the Omron PLCs.

The system can be controlled both from operator stations and from the operator pannels located at different sections of the plant.

TRACE MODE at Nuclear Power Plants: New Results

The new TRACE MODE  based project was implemented by the specialists of Kola nuclear power plant (Murmansk Region) in atomoc industry. It is the second case of the TRACE MODE launching at nuclear power plants.

The monotoring system of nuclear power plant units has been developed by specialists of VNIIEF-Volgogas (Sarov, Nizhny Novgorod Region) and for the first time implemented at the Kalininskaya NPP. The success of the first project has become the basis for subsequent implementations. At the present time, the TRACE MODE based project on Kola NPP is at the stage of commercial operation. Beginning from 2003-2005, it is planned to implement the monitoring system on three more power-generating units.

The project hardware part has been developed on the basis of Schneider-Electric and Omron controllers, TRACE MODE 5 RTMs are used on operator servers. The information archiving is carried out by a global register, one of the best high-performance process data acquisition systems in the industry branch. The report generation is performed by a TRACE MODE global documenting server.

This implementation also has another interesting result. The automation systems at all industrial enterprises located at the Kola peninsula are operated under the TRACE MODE control. The first  TRACE MODE based system in this region appeared at the Severonickel Industrial Complex (Monchegorsk, Russia) in 1998. Then it was implemented at Pechenganickel, Kovdor mining and processing complex, Apatite Industrial Complex, Kandalaksha Aluminium Plant and, at last, Kola NPP.

All above-listed enterprises are going to further develop TRACE MODE based systems.

Free Drivers for Siemens And Allen-Bradley PLC
